Education programmes

The Wellington Museums Trust provides a comprehensive programme of curriculum-linked education experiences at all the facilities and each year more than 25,000 children attend. The Trust currently has three contracts with the Ministry of Education to deliver LOETC (Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom) programmes.

Capital E
Capital E provides daily sessions for schools at the Capital E SoundHouse™ New Zealand music technology and performance facility and the TV studio OnTV as well as regular holiday programmes. Capital E National Theatre for Children also provides an outstanding line-up of professional productions, which are performed for a large number of Wellington schools. The theatre company also tours productions to 16 centres nationwide performing in local theatres, providing a major medium for teachers to meet their ongoing LEOTC curriculum requirements. The biennial Capital E National Arts Festival also provides opportunities for students to access national artists across a range of art media. Charges apply to these programmes.

Education class in the Foundation Room

Museum of Wellington City & Sea
The Museum offers guided museum visits and hands-on workshops for visiting groups, with a free teacher resource kit available on booking. Visits can be individually tailored, or you can choose from programmes including Gallery Explorer (a general visit), Te Waka Wahine (a day of disaster), Get your Bearings (basic orienteering with a nautical theme around the museum and the waterfront), Whanganui a Tara (the great harbour of Tara), Wellington 1900 – school/toys and games, Maori Life and Legend, and Urban Settlement. A small charge is made for each student.

Activities in the City Gallery Wellington

City Gallery Wellington
The Gallery provides curriculum-based programmes for visiting education groups of all ages, as well as a range of holiday activities. The education programmes are written and delivered by trained visual arts teachers and a specialist Maori educator, and can be individually tailored to suit class and subject requirements from primary to secondary school. All visits consist of a guided tour of the art on exhibition, which can extend into a workshop-based activity.

School group tour of the Colonial Cottage

Colonial Cottage Museum
Education visits to the museum have a colonial theme, making full use of the cottage and adjacent education facility. A tour of the museum and discussion of 19th Century domestic life (which is illustrated in the way the cottage has been furnished), is generally followed by a choice of hands-on activities including pikelet-making on the wood stove, playing with 19th Century toys and games, daylight printing or spinning.  A comprehensive teachers’ guide, which provides full information on the cottage and related curriculum opportunities, is available. A small charge is made for each student.

Education group at the Basin Reserve New Zealand Cricket Museum encourages visits from school groups and has produced a free teacher’s resource workbook designed for levels 3, 4 and 5 students. As well as providing information about the museum and some sample worksheets, the workbook gives direct curriculum links and examples of specific learning outcomes for students (for example; Social Studies - students will learn about the origins of cricket and give examples of how this may have influenced the society we live in today, and Mathematics - students will be able to make comparisons between players vital cricket statistics and be able to talk about their findings).

The museum offers curriculum linked programmes for school groups. Due to the museum being small and as a consideration for other visitors a pre booking is required.
