About Wellington

  • Wellington City Council contains a wealth of information about city services and facilities. It also links to the Council’s Feeling Great website, which details what’s on in Wellington.
  • www.wellingtonnz.com is the official tourism website for the capital, run by Positively Wellington Tourism. It’s the complete guide to Wellington and has information about accommodation, restaurants and shops, sights and activities, transport and maps.

Council-controlled organisations

The Wellington City Council has established several companies and trusts to independently manage Council facilities, or to deliver significant services and to undertake developments on behalf of the Wellington community. The following provide visitor events and tourism activities:

Museums, heritage and conservation organisations

  • Museums Aotearoa has as its vision to raise the profile, strengthen the performance, and increase the value of museums and galleries to their stakeholders and the community.

  • New Zealand Museums is a directory of New Zealand museums and contacts.

  • The New Zealand Historic Places Trust is the country's leading heritage agency whose mission is to keep New Zealand's heritage places alive and useful. The Trust's activities relate to the recognition, protection and promotion of New Zealand's historic and cultural heritage.
  • Karori Wildlife Sanctuary Trust: the sanctuary is a protected bush area within Wellington designed to provide a safe haven for native birds.
